Girls soccer finish second after the perfect regular season

On December 8th the Lady Hawks competed in the league finals. They advanced to the league championship game after a 2-1 win over Exeter as Valarie Mena and Tatiana Verduzco scored goals for Sequoia. The defense, led by Lexie Cox, Alexis Connelly, Bryn Short and Kayley Halopoff, played a key roll in stopping a potent Exeter attack.

After Valarie Mena redirected a corner kick from Kim Cortez for a goal and a miscommunication led to Sequoia scoring a goal for the other team. Tatiana took a cross from Kristen Gomez late in the game and put it into an open net for the game winning goal.

In the Championship game, Sequoia's defense, with help from midfielders Julissa Andrade, Quitelli Sanchez, Valarie Mena, and Noemi Linan, held a very talented Live Oak Team. Live Oak had been beating opponents by 3 to 5 goals a game –scoreless, as both teams battled for a 0-0 tie. The tie forced a shootout in which Sequoia came out on the short end of 3-2.

Sequoia's perfect season ended with a not so perfect ending, but every player should feel that they contributed to a total team effort and celebrate the victories and battles we fought together. The Hawks ended with an 11-1 record winning the Pac-5 division, and outscore its opponents 36-2.

Mr. Haas could not have asked for a better group of players, and he is very proud of each and every one of you. For the last time this season, GO HAWKS!
